About

Sugar City Marine was founded by Ray Leigh and Warren Gray, both very accomplished entrepreneurs and marine mechanics that started out as apprentices and were promoted to manager and workshop foreman at Fields Marine Pty Ltd, which Leigh and Gray bought out to start their own business. Its operations began in 1986, one year before the company moved to its current location on 11 Victoria Street, Mackay – a prime spot boasting a spacious block on the main street, front and side access, a secure parking area for boats and a very convenient distance from a boat ramp.

After its founders’ retirement in 2008 – more than two successful decades following its launch – Sugar City Marine welcomed its new owners and directors Steve Leigh and Wayne Riddle: Leigh, who completed a motorcycle mechanic apprenticeship as well as an outboard mechanic apprenticeship, has been involved in the business since 2005, taking charge of key departments, such as sales, parts, finance, insurance and customer service. Riddle, who has been earning various certificates and awards – including Queensland Technician of the Year – since starting his marine mechanic apprenticeship in 1986, is a true expert in his field, having an array of knowledge ranging from standard inboards and outboards to jet skis.

Today Sugar City Marine is Mackay’s largest marine dealer and one of Queensland’s leading marine dealerships. Its reputation for offering quality products, competitive prices and superior technical and customer service from an extensively trained personnel with 100 years of combined experience has resulted in numerous honors.

Our Speciality
Sugar City Marine sells only the best products from the most trusted brands. Among its diverse offerings, Quintrex and Mercury have been consistently the most sought after, earning the company the Quintrex Dealer of the Year and the Platinum Plus Mercury Dealer title for years and years in a row.

Quintrex Boats
Quintrex is the largest aluminium boat manufacturer in Australia. It is famous for its practical, innovative products which are also exported to Europe, USA, China, Japan and other Asia- Pacific regions. The careful design and development of Quintrex boats have resulted in creations equal, if not superior, to many fibreglass boats in terms of ride characteristics and overall performance. A comprehensive selection from the diverse Quintrex range – both big and small – is available at the store, and more than 50 boats are in stock to allow visiting customers to see what they actually want, not just pictures on a brochure.

Mercury
Mercury Marine is the leading manufacturer of economical and reliable outboard motors which are renowned for their sleek looks and cutting-edge design. It has no need to over-diversify and sell products that have nothing to do with the marine business, and this complete dedication to the industry is the reason it has long been a leader – making the most outboard sales than any other brand in the world.

Also a pioneer, Mercury Marine has made all of the major design breakthroughs in the last 50 years. It actually produced a high percentage of the four-stroke componentry – engines, gearboxes, ignitions – that other manufacturers continue to use, and to this day, it employs

only the latest engineering, electronic and corrosion-resistance technology to create the best outboards possible. The Mercury XK360, for example, is proven by independent tests to be far superior in strength and corrosion resistance than anything else in the market.

Couple everything that Mercury Marine outboards have to offer with a full three-year, unlimited-hour warranty, and you have motors that truly no other manufacturer can match.

Quintrex Trailers
Quintrex trailers are engineered to deliver the best in performance, handling and comfort. They are manufactured in the same Australian factory that makes Quintrex boats and produced according to the standards Quintrex has always been famed for. Each trailer is designed with the correct weight and hull support and with hot-dipped, galvanised frames, axle and springs to reduce corrosion from the elements. Larger trailers come with tandem wheels and brakes as well as custom V-Loader systems which guide boats onto trailers easily.
